Update on measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

What are Repeat Prescriptions?

green_pill_spill Some of our patients are placed by their Doctor on a repeat prescribing system which allows them to receive medication for a limited period of time without having an appointment with the Doctor.

How Can I Order My Repeat Prescriptions?

Our repeat prescription system is computerised and re-ordering is a simple matter. Attached to each prescription is a tear-off slip containing a complete list of your particular medication. Keep this and when you wish to re-order, tick the items you require.

Your request can be dropped into the surgery or posted, and we will try to have it ready for collection within two working days of receipt. Alternatively, if you provide us with a stamped and addressed envelope, we will post it to you.

Remember to order in good time if you are using the postal system. We do not take requests for repeat prescriptions over the telephone.

Pharmacy

The pharmacy located in the building next to the surgery belongs to National Co-operative Chemist Ltd (the Co-op) and we have no control over the service it provides.

Prescription Collection Service

pharmacist_4 If you take medication on repeat prescriptions you may wish to take advantage of a free service offered by several of the local pharmacies. They will offer to collect prescriptions from the surgery and have the medication ready for collection at an agreed time at their premises.

In certain special circumstances they may also be prepared to deliver, such as to the elderly, disabled and housebound.

If you wish to take advantage of this service you can find out which pharmacies participate by phoning your usual pharmacist or asking at the surgery Reception.

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

NHS charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £104.00
3-month PPC: £29.10

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.
